Ingredients

Check off items as you gather them
  • 1 cup medium sabudana (tapioca pearls)
  • 1/2 cup roasted peanuts, coarsely crushed
  • 1 medium potato, boiled, peeled, and diced into small cubes
  • 2-3 green chilies, finely chopped (adjust to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 2 tablespoons ghee or oil
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon
  • 1 teaspoon rock salt (sendha namak), or to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh coriander leaves, chopped, for garnish

Method / Preparation

Follow step-by-step instructions
  1. Rinse the sabudana under running water until the water runs clear. Soak the sabudana in just enough water to cover them (about 1 cup water for 1 cup sabudana) for 4-6 hours or overnight, until they are soft and easily mashable.
  2. Drain any excess water from the soaked sabudana thoroughly. In a bowl, gently mix the soaked sabudana with the crushed peanuts, diced potato, rock salt, and sugar (if using). Ensure the pearls are separated.
  3. Heat ghee or oil in a heavy-bottomed pan or kadai over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  4. Add the chopped green chilies and sauté for 30 seconds.
  5. Add the sabudana mixture to the pan. Mix well, making sure all ingredients are evenly distributed.
  6. Cover the pan and cook on low heat for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally. The sabudana will turn translucent.
  7. Once the sabudana turns mostly translucent and soft, add the lemon juice and chopped fresh coriander leaves. Mix gently.
  8. Serve hot, garnished with a little extra coriander if desired. Pair with a bowl of yogurt or a simple fruit raita for a complete Farali meal.
