Ingredients

Check off items as you gather them
  • 1 cup warm milk (105-1150F)
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar, plus 1 teaspoon
  • 1 large egg, at room temperature
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Vegetable oil or non-stick spray, for greasing
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2-3 tablespoons milk (for glaze)

Method / Preparation

Follow step-by-step instructions
  1. In a large bowl, combine the warm milk, 1 teaspoon of granulated sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add the remaining 1/4 cup granulated sugar, egg, melted butter, vanilla extract, and salt to the yeast mixture. Whisk well to combine.
  3. Gradually add the all-purpose flour, 1 cup at a time, mixing with a wooden spoon until a shaggy dough forms. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until it's smooth and elastic.
  4. Lightly grease a clean bowl with vegetable oil. Place the dough in the bowl, turn it once to coat, then cover with a clean kitchen towel. Let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  5. Once risen, gently punch down the dough. Roll it out on a lightly floured surface to about 1/2-inch thickness. Use a donut cutter or two different-sized round cutters (e.g., 3-inch and 1-inch) to cut out donut shapes. Reroll scraps and cut more donuts.
  6. Place the cut donuts on a parchment-lined baking sheet, leaving some space between them. Cover loosely with the kitchen towel and let them rise for another 30-45 minutes, or until visibly puffy.
  7. Preheat your oven to 375F (190C). Bake the donuts for 10-15 minutes, or until they are golden brown on the edges and cooked through.
  8. While the donuts are baking, prepare a simple glaze by whisking together the powdered sugar and 2-3 tablespoons of milk until smooth. Add more milk if needed to reach your desired consistency.
  9. Once the donuts are slightly cooled but still warm, dip each donut into the glaze, letting any excess drip off. Place them on a wire rack to set. Serve warm and enjoy!
